I was born into a Bangladeshi-Belarusian family in Minsk, Belarus, and moved to Bangladesh with my parents when I was two years old. I spent much of my childhood in Dhaka, often visiting Belarus in the summer. When I was twelve, my family moved to Kuwait, where I stayed until the end of high school. I did my BA in international relations at Grinnell College in Iowa, in the US, where I met my wife, Katie, whom I married in June 2005. In my third year in college, I spent a semester exploring Central Europe from Olomouc in the Czech Republic. After graduating in 2003, I worked for a year at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a think-tank located in Washington, D.C., before moving to Montréal to begin my graduate studies.
